Spyker 1898-1926

spyker

(This book is currently sold out.)

In 1880 the Spyker brothers started a carriage factory. With the advent of the motorised car, they switched to the production of cars. Not nearly all inventions launched by the Amsterdam company were a success, but the development of the four wheel drive in 1903 and the first standing six cylinder in the same year brought Spyker international recognition. Soon after, the dust shield chassis followed. Spyker exported to various countries among which the United Kingdom. Eventually, however, exclusive car sales proved disappointing and in 1926 the factory ceased to exist. Spyker 1898-1926 is the standard work on this Dutch car company.

The horseless vehicle: the car in the Netherlands a century ago is a collection of contributions on early cars in the Netherlands. It appeared on the occasion of the first car to arrive in the Netherlands a century ago, in 1896. From different perspectives, four authors (Ariejan Bos, Hans van Groningen, Gijs Mom and Vincent van der Vinne) shed light on the introduction of the car in the Netherlands. Vincent van der Vinne discusses entrepreneurs in a society in which the use of private, modern means of transportation commences. His contribution focusses on dealers in bicycles, motorcycles, cars and airplanes.

(This book is currently sold out.)

Vincent van der Vinne’s paper on the history of the electric car in the Netherlands from 1896 to 1920, set in the social context of that time, resulted in a joint article on the same subject with Gijs Mom. The article was published in an historical journal in 1994. After that, the two wrote a book about electric cars. In this book, Vincent van der Vinne discusses the history of these vehicles, its distribution in two stages, the competitive relationship between the electric car and the horse, and the success and failure factors of electric cars.
